Dr. Brian Valentini, an associate professor of special education at St. Cloud State University, has been appointed by Governor Tim Walz to the Minnesota Statewide Independent Living Council (MNSILC).
The Council provides statewide planning and policies necessary to provide independent living services to people with disabilities.
Valentini is passionate about serving the disability population, and he wants to build on the Council’s work of advocating and amplifying the voices of a marginalized community to help influence policies.
“My experience centers around supporting young adults as they navigate the transition from high school to employment, pursue postsecondary education and work towards independent living,” Valentini said. “Being a part of the MNSILC is a perfect opportunity for me to align my efforts with these important goals.”
Valentini’s appointment to the council will run until Jan. 3, 2028.
“In my three years on the Council, I hope we can build upon the meaningful work already done while striving even harder to advocate for the civil rights of individuals with disabilities throughout Minnesota,” he said. “Together, we can make a difference in the lives of so many.”
Valentini earned his Ph.D. in Special Education and Teaching from San Diego State University, and he has taught at SCSU since 2018.
“Dr. Valentini is an expert in this area, and he is a well-deserved appointment,” said Melissa Hanzsek-Brill, interim dean of the College of Education and Learning Design. “Our students benefit from having professors who are applying their knowledge to help individuals across the state.”
