The “Remember W.W. Holes Hall” event is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. April 16 at St. Cloud State University.
The event is a final opportunity to share memories and meet friends prior to the summer 2016 demolition of the nine-story building. A fall Holes Hall reunion event, during Celebrate St. Cloud State, is being planned.
Holes Hall will not be open, but photo displays, memorabilia and a tunnel tour are sure to spark recollections and conversations.
Visit the Holes Hall Farewell Facebook page to view photos and read comments posted by former students.
Meet in the Stearns Hall lobby. Parking is $1.50 per hour in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp. Parking is free on city streets north of Fourth Street South, which is part of the same-day Earth Day Half Marathon race route.
Refreshments will be served.
From 1965-2014, Holes Hall was home to tens of thousands of St. Cloud State students.
Its small rooms, modest amenities and large, common bathrooms no longer appeal to young people. University leaders, MnSCU officials and construction consultants deem it cost-prohibitive to remodel. For the near term, the Holes Hall site will be converted to green space.
Stearns Hall, built adjacent to Holes in 1966, is no longer in use and is slated for demolition. In 2013, sister university Minnesota State Mankato demolished two student residential towers from the same era.
Holes Hall is named for the late St. Cloud businessman Wilbur W. Holes, who represented St. Cloud State on the state college board from 1947-1958.
In recent months, St. Cloud Fire Department and St. Cloud Police Department have used Holes Hall as a training site.
Farewell Holes Hall! You are responsible for my meeting some of the best friends in my life. Thank you for that!
Wasn’t there also a tunnel from Stewart hall to Mitchell hall?
I lived on the 9th floor of Holes Hall from 1966-1968. I met dear friends & had wonderful experiences there. One Christmas, our floor visited a “old folks home” & passed around a lot of love. We had Halloween parties. And many mornings we’d gather in the halls & exercise to “Go you chicken fat, go!!” I have such fond memories of my time there!!
Cheers to Holes Hall. Many great times and memories that will never be forgotten!
I lived on 2nd floor Stearns during the 1974-75 school year. Fond Memories.
It was my Freshmen year of 2005. Many fond memories and made many new friends. I still recall the incident when someone threw the fire extinguisher out the 9th floor window and smashing the car below. Also, can’t forget the LAN parties we had “duking” it out in HALO 2! All in all, it was a great part of my college experience. – Alumni
Lived on the 7th floor with Andy in 1975. Good times and many friends.
Loved the years I spent working in Holes Hall and all of the friendships I made. Hello to all those who lived there 1973-77! Yikes, has it been that long??

Fall 1974, first Co-Ed freshman dorm on St Cloud campus. I lived on 9th floor. What a crazy, fun time. Met some great people.
Lived on the fourth floor 1966-1967. The rooms were ok but the bathrooms weren’t great even back then. It was an all women dorm and men were not allowed on the floors. It was great having the tunnels to the lunch room in the winter. We couldn’t even have refrigerators or TV back then.
Holes hall 1985/86 has many great memories! Listening to U2 and Prince. A super cold trip to ski spirit mountain with the 9th floor guys that was crazy. Sneaking booze in the front door every weekend with lots of friends made and good times.
