Herne wins silver in sociology paper competition

Emily Herne earned second place in the Sociologists of Minnesota (SoM) Caroline Rose Student Paper Competition. Herne is an undergraduate sociology major from McHenry, Illinois. Her paper is titled “Comparisons of Organizations that Organize around Issues Facing Immigrant Women.”

She will be recognized at the Friday awards luncheon at the SoM annual conference Sept. 29-30 at St. Cloud State. The competition is named for Caroline Baer Rose (1913-1975), a University of Minnesota sociologist, author and state legislator. University of Minnesota students won first place in the undergraduate and graduate divisions. There were 14 papers in the undergraduate division. “I felt [Emily] was a good writer in terms of clarity and organization,” said Thomas Hanson, one of three readers in the competition. “I felt she laid out the concepts and provided good rationale for sampling the two groups she focused upon.” Hanson is a professor at Anoka Ramsey Community College, Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Herne, who is minoring in rhetorical writing, is co-chair of Students Organized for Change, a student organization. Kevin Revier ’11 won the competition in 2011. Finishing second that year was Matthew Lauritsen ’11. Leoma Van Dort, a Social Responsibility graduate student, finished second in the graduate division in 2015.
