St. Cloud Times — Katie Fitzgerald ’16 was in awe of the weekend because she knows she nearly did not play competitive hockey this season.
Fitzgerald, a former St. Cloud State goalie, took part in the National Women’s Hockey League All-Star Game last weekend in Pittsburgh. Fitzgerald, who completed her eligibility with the Huskies last February, was signed by the New York Riveters in August.
Before that, she had tried to catch on with a team in Europe and it didn’t pan out. When she signed with the Riveters, Fitzgerald thought she would be the team’s No. 3 goalie.
Instead, she leads the NWHL in games played (12), is second in shutouts (2), third in goals-against average (2.90) and third in save percentage (.905). She is 5-5-1 and was chosen by the league’s coaches to participate in the All-Star weekend.
