St. Cloud Times – The opportunity to take college-level courses as a high school junior brought Halimo Mire to St. Cloud Technical & Community College.
The Monticello student eventually enrolled at St. Cloud State University after her high school graduation, and what she saw in St. Cloud helped form her desire to help break down cultural, racial and religious barriers. St. Cloud, during that initial trip, was quite different than Monticello, where she said her family was one of a few Somali families in town.
“I actually saw people with hijabs walking around. I saw people who, when I go hang out with my family, looked like them,” she said.
Now the political science major is part of a group at St. Cloud State working on a campaign to combat violent extremism.
