Yasmin Fatima, Deepika K C, Mala Hamal and Anoosh Kathi won the award for Best Our Husky Compact Reflection in the Think Creatively and Critically dimension for their presentation “Social Commerce Security, Privacy and Trust.” Their faculty mentor is Abu Hussein.
Huskies Showcase is being presented virtually on a volunteer basis for students, faculty and staff to interact with the projects on D2L Brightspace. Finalists and Husky Compact dimension winners were named this April. No awards will be presented for oral or poster presentation beyond finalist designations due to limitations of the virtual format.
Their faculty mentor is Tina Sacin. Their project was also named a finalist for research in the poster presentation category.
The dimensions come from Our Husky Compact. The six dimensions embody the essential and cross-cutting attributes of a St. Cloud State University education. These attributes are developed over time and across and beyond the curriculum.
Presentation Abstract:
Social networking has been a fertile ground for the growth of e-commerce business. Various social commerce activities like Sales, marketing and payment procedures play a vital role in thriving the business. But there are some vulnerabilities in emerging social commerce technology that can put the user’s security, privacy and trust aspects in stake. The vulnerability can be either on the system end or in the user’s “buyer’s or seller’s“ end. So, in the first part of this paper, we are discussing in detail about the social commerce and evolution of social networking platforms. Then, we will be discussing about the social commerce activities and security, privacy and trust issues with a detailed taxonomy.
Reflection:
Our project is based on social commerce and it’s security, privacy and trust issues. When we look at social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more from a user point of view, it is a perfect mode of communication and with added advantage of using it as a commercial page to buy, sell and market the product is just like cherry on the top.
As a student studying the security aspects of a software system, we felt that the end users should be aware about possible vulnerabilities that social commerce might have and we generated taxonomy with a vision to make people understand easily.
This shows that we have acted with personal integrity and civic responsibility. One of the challenge when building this project was that we were a new team who were working with one another for the first time. Also, time played a very vital role. We worked, have different classes and had different time when we were available. Also,
Anoosha – one of our team member – was blessed with a newly born daughter during this period. We used different media to be together. We had varied point of view and at times, we came up with different conclusions. We listened to understand everyone’s viewpoint, we paraphrased our wordings to be clear and understandable and we asked questions, reach out to our advisor, refer to papers for clarity. We learned to listen to each other’s point of view and conclude with everyone’s agreement.
Therefore, we learned to communicate effectively and integrate existing and evolving technologies. Our team comprised of people from four different part of the world. With two different religious belief. We shared our culture and discussed the practice between each religion in each part of the world we are from. It was a fun conversation and interesting facts to be exposed to. We loved to share the differences. We still have the bond and plan to share our unique cuisine some day. We are thankful for the St. Cloud State University for being home to all national and international students and accepting diversity. This has encouraged us to engage as a member of a diverse and multicultural world.
