St. Cloud Times — It was a baseball season that started tragically. One of the players, Geoff Hibbison, was killed during the first road trip of the season, run over by a drunk driver.
By the end of season, the 1980 St. Cloud State baseball team had won the NIC championship, split with major college powers Arkansas and Minnesota and was recorded in Huskies folklore as one of head coach Denny Lorsung’s best teams.
The squad produced three major leaguers: Jim Eisenreich, Bob Hegman and Dana Kiecker.
The 1980 team will be recognized during the Eighth Annual First Pitch Banquet at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Coyote Moon Grill at The Territory Golf Course. That will be followed by SCSU baseball’s Grand Slam on Grand Lake ice fishing contest Saturday. (Contact the SCSU baseball office at 308-3541.)
