The October season opener, “Art is Free,” is an originally devised work created by Wave of Cacophony Theatre, a group of students from an improvisational class in spring 2015. The show is directed by Costume Studio Director Carol Cooley and Associate Professor Jen Tuder.
The production focuses on a struggling theater company in a world where it’s “illegal to offer, agree to, or engage in an artistic act for compensation” — where literally art is free.
The the entire series includes:
- “Art is Free” 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20-24, 2 p.m. Oct. 25, Performing Arts Center, arena stage
- “Tartuffe” 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1-5, 2 p.m. Dec. 6, Performing Arts Center, center stage
- “All in the Timing” 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23-27, 2 p.m. Feb. 28, Performing Arts Center, arena stage
- “Hair” 7:30 p.m. April 19-23, 2 p.m. April 24, Performing Arts Center, center stage
Associate Professor Vladimir Rovinsky will direct “Tartuffe,” a 1664 comedy by Moliere that follows a scheming imposter and the family he tries to ruin. The comedy’s themes of lust, greed and religious hypocrisy remain relevant today.
A collection of short one-act comedies, “All in the Timing” will feature wacky characters, sparkling repartee and inspired verbal dexterity. The comedies will be directed by Professor Brenda Wentworth.
The season will conclude with a production of the musical “Hair.” The musical, also a part of the 2015-16 Creative Art Series, shocked the nation on its release on Broadway with its themes involving sex, drugs, rock music and political protest. Directed by Associate Professor Jeffrey Bleam, “Hair” is a collaboration between the departments of music and theater. The show is recommended for mature audiences only.
Tickets for attending a St. Cloud State Theater Department event are $10 for adults, $7 for non-St. Cloud State students and seniors, and free with a St. Cloud State ID.
