SCSU couple returns to Latvia 25 years later as Fulbright Scholars

St. Cloud State University hosted its annual Leadership Breakfast on Thursday, June 6 at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. This year’s event included a panel discussion on the benefits of and the need for lifelong learning.
Eddah Mutua, a professor in St. Cloud State University’s Judy C. Pearson Department of Communication Studies, was awarded a fellowship by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) that supports educational projects in Africa.
This award is one of 60 projects funded for 2024-25 academic year that pair African Diaspora scholars with higher education institutions and collaborators in Africa to work together on curriculum co-development, collaborative research, graduate training and mentoring activities.
Biology Assistant Professor Angela McDonnell recently co-authored a publication in the prestigious journal Nature titled Phylogenomics and the rise of the angiosperms.
“Having a publication in a journal like Nature, which spans all of science, is kind of a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” McDonnell said. “I feel really grateful to have amazing collaborators and colleagues that also want to work with me.”
The Dr. Potter’s Bigs on Campus Mentoring Initiative celebrated the conclusion of it’s eighth year with 21 “matches” recognized for their dedication to the program. Bigs on Campus pairs St. Cloud State faculty, staff, alumni, and upperclassmen as role models and mentors with sixth through twelfth graders from South Jr. High and Tech High Schools.
Rochelle Dyer was appointed by Governor Tim Walz to serve on Minnesota’s Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB). She will serve a two-year term beginning April 24, 2024 representing teachers in a board-approved teacher preparation program.
Over 600 St. Cloud State University alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends showed their support for St. Cloud State and the Minnesota Twins during SCSU Day at Target Field over the weekend. The Board of Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities has named Larry Dietz to serve as interim president of St. Cloud State University (SCSU). The appointment will be effective beginning July 1, 2024.
“I am pleased that Dr. Dietz has agreed to come out of retirement and lead St. Cloud State University as interim president for the next two years,” said Scott Olson, chancellor of Minnesota State.
The National Dance Coaches Association has named St. Cloud State University Dance Team’s head coach Brittany Kwallek as a College Coach of the Year finalist.
Kwallek has coached for six years, leading the team to five national championships and 11 top-three finishes.
Four St. Cloud State University employees were recently honored in the annual Minnesota State Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence.
The awards provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior commitment to student learning and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence at the colleges and universities of Minnesota State.
