The St. Cloud State Foundation received a gift of $25,000 from Byron “Bud” Bergren ’71, for scholarships benefiting students in the Herberger Business School.
Bergren majored in management at St. Cloud State and spent most his career in retail, most recently as the president and CEO of Bon-Ton Stores Inc., which chiefly operates more than 275 stores and owns chains including Herberger’s, Younkers and others. He also was president and CEO of Elder-Beerman Stores Corp. and was a senior vice president and partner with Belk Inc.
“The education I received at St. Cloud State University gave me the opportunity to be successful.” Bergren said. “I hope my contribution can help other people get that same opportunity.”
The scholarship program will award one annual scholarship for $1,000 minimum. It will help support junior and senior students enrolled full-time in the Herberger Business School who demonstrate financial need.
“Byron Bergren has had an outstanding career since graduating from St. Cloud State University, and we are very grateful for his generosity,” said Matt Andrew, vice president for University Advancement. “Byron’s gift will provide students in the Herberger Business School financial assistance they need so they can be part of the next generation of leaders in our business community.”
