The visibility is bright for two St. Cloud State University meteorology students, who earned the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Award for 2015.
Sophomores Jessica McDonald, Sobieski, Wisconsin, and Cody Yeary, St. Cloud, are the second and third students from St. Cloud State to win the award. The NOAA normally selects about 100 sophomores around the country each year. Andrea Thorstensen ’11 won the award in 2009 and is currently a Ph.D. student at UC-Irvine.
“Having two St. Cloud State meteorology students win this scholarship says magnitudes about how wonderful the meteorology program is here,” McDonald said. “The professors regularly spend time with students outside of class”….”They provide the necessary support to make great achievements in this field as a student.”
The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with up to $8,000 per year in academic assistance for full-time students and a 10 week full-time summer internship at a NOAA facility which will begin May 2016.
“This is a prestigious scholarship that requires a high level of academic success to receive,” Yeary said. “I’m excited and relieved that my hard work has paid off so early in my academic career.”
The internship provides hands-on practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management and education activities.
McDonald and Yeary will travel to Washington D.C. May 25-30, spending the week at NOAA Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, for an orientation and training program.
