Grammy-winning percussion group in residence in April

Third Coast Percussion
Third Coast Percussion will be in residence at St. Cloud State in April.

Grammy-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion will be in residence at St. Cloud State University April 12-13 with interactive discussions, workshops and performances.

The ensemble will perform a public concert at 7:30 p.m. April 12 in the Performing Arts Center’s Ruth Gant Recital Hall.

Third Coast Percussion is a group of four classically-trained percussionists from Chicago. The group won the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for its album “Third Coast Percussion | Steve Reich”.

The residency includes sessions on arts entrepreneurship, commissioning composers, best practices when composing for percussion instruments, free improvisation and the business of chamber music.

From 9:30-10:30 a.m. April 13 the ensemble will present “Think Outside of the Drum” an educational program at Clearview Elementary School introducing children to the building blocks of music.

At 6 p.m. April 13 the group will perform Terry Riley’s “In C” in the Atwood Memorial Center by the Fireplace Lounge.

All the activities are free and open to the public.

The events are part of the School of the Arts’ 2016-17 Creative Art Series. The 11 events in the third-annual series are designed to expand students’ experiences and the public’s perspectives by introducing them to new concepts and perceptions in the School of the Arts four disciplines — art, film, theater and music.

The Third Coast Percussion residency is made possible thanks to the School of the Arts, the Stephen Fuller Artist Residency Fund, the Central Minnesota Arts Board Artist Residency Grant, and the David Swenson Memorial Foundation Guest Artists Series, Bruce and Dee Pearson Professional Development Fund.
