ST. CLOUD TIMES — It was one of those things Will Borgen has known for a while, but had to keep to himself — until Monday.
Borgen, a defenseman on the St. Cloud State men’s hockey team, was one of four college players named to the 23-player U.S. Olympic team during the NHL’s 2018 Winter Classic.
Borgen said he found out about being named to the team in mid December, but was not supposed to tell anyone until Monday’s announcement.
“I talked to them a little bit earlier in the year, but I didn’t know anything until once I got home for (semester) break,” said Borgen, a junior from Moorhead. St. Cloud State head “Coach (Bob) Motzko called me and it was definitely a surprise.
“It was something I didn’t expect. It’s really cool.”
Borgen will not be the lone player on the American roster with St. Cloud State ties. Former St. Cloud State center Garrett Roe, a 29-year-old from Vienna, Virginia, was also named to the team. Roe is playing professional hockey in Switzerland.
