St. Cloud State has become the first college or university in Minnesota to have a recognized student chapter of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). It is an accomplishment three years in the making, fostered by Master of Pubic Administration (MPA) faculty and students.
Professor Shawn Schooley says ICMA is “the professional organization for local government administrators.”
The goal of the St. Cloud State ICMA student chapter is to create a system of networking and integrate students into local government management professions. ICMA provides members with career resources, raises the standards of behavior, and maintains key information on topics such as community engagement, economic & community development, leadership & ethics, and public safety. Many of the aforementioned are not available to non-members.
Alfred Kibwota will serve as the first student president. Christina Brennan will serve as the first student vice-president. Both students are in the MPA program.
While intended for MPA students, the ICMA student chapter will be open to all students interested in public service, local government, or administration. Kibwota stresses “the new connection with ICMA will open doors and greater opportunities to students who want to excel in the [public service] sector.”
Vice-president Brennan says this is a big milestone for St. Cloud State. “It is an honor and privilege to become active on campus and in the community,” she said.
