St. Cloud State University’s Recovery Resource Center has partnered with St. Cloud’s Recovery Community Network to provide every campus building with NARCAN, a naloxone nasal spray that can be a life-saving measure during an opioid overdose.
By installing these emergency kits, SCSU is taking a proactive approach in light of the dangers opioid poisoning presents to our community. Accidental poisonings and overdoses impact college campuses across the country, and many have taken measures to provide naloxone emergency kits.
Free access to NARCAN can now be found in every AED (Automated External Defibrillator) on the St. Cloud and Plymouth campuses, along with specific NARCAN boxes located in buildings without an AED. This convenient resource is now available in over 30 locations thanks to grant funding from the Recovery Community Network.
SCSU is also working to support students and the campus community by informing them of how to properly administer NARCAN in case of an emergency.
“Fewer than 15 percent of college students know how to administer NARCAN, and we are looking to increase that number,” said Jen Johnson, director for health promotion, prevention and recovery at SCSU. “In the event of an overdose, it is crucial that people know how to use this life-saving medication.”
Monthly in-person training sessions will take place on Jan. 29, Feb. 27, March 25 and April 28 at noon in the Atwood Mississippi Room.
