St. Cloud State alumnus Hao Nguyen was recently featured on a Feb. 28 news segment on Kare11.
Hao Nguyen never hesitated to help a man standing on a ledge, but said he couldn’t have ever done it alone.
ST. CLOUD LIVE — Four times a year, inside Pioneer Place on Fifth in St. Cloud, one can experience the golden age of radio while still firmly in the 21st century.
“It’s this fun, old-school, new-school situation,” said Jeff Carmack, arts and cultural heritage producer for KVSC 88.1 FM in St. Cloud, a college and community radio station based at St. Cloud State University. “It is theater of the mind.”
UNIVERSITY CHRONICLE — Team 49: ‘Stefan’s Dream 24: In flagrante delicto’ finished with a total of 11,080 points and earned 1st place in the 44th annual Trivia Weekend. The theme for this year was Trivia on Trial. The award ceremony took place in Ritsche Auditorium in Stewart Hall on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 8:00 p.m.
At the end of the event, Jo McMullen-Boyer announced she would be retiring from her position as Station Manager of KVSC after 31 years. However, trivia is still part of her. She said she is still planning on participating in and supporting future trivia contests, but no longer as the Station Manager.
“This is my final year as manager of trivia shenanigans,” McMullen said. “I will be retiring at the end of June.”
WJON — Learning and the ways people learn has changed quite a bit in the past few years. St. Cloud State has grown their online MBA program (Masters of Business Administration) over the past few months.
Dr. Robbyn Wacker is the President of the University and joined Jay Caldwell on WJON. She says St. Cloud State’s MBA program is accredited from AACSB. Wacker indicates the options are to receive a MBA in a concentration of business leadership, accounting, finance, information system or professional sales. She says they are aligned with workforce demand.
WJON — St. Cloud State University has a new face on campus. Chase Neukam has started his job as the SCSU Esports Director.
Neukam graduated from Ball State University in 2018. While at Ball State, he helped establish Cardinal Esports, which grew into an organization boasting eight teams and over 300 students. In 2019, Neukam was named the Director of Esports and Esports coach at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.
KNSI — St. Cloud State University is among the schools getting a Google grant for project funding to help train students for future jobs through various tech training programs.
Google gave the $50,000 grant to the Minnesota State IT Center of Excellence. St. Cloud State, Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University Mankato, Minnesota State University Moorhead, and Winona State University will get $10,000. The money will be used to help train faculty on course content, develop a program for college students to learn how to create digital portfolios, expand the use of career readiness modules to the education and business programs on campus, create a workforce training program to expand the success of underserved and underpaid minorities, and develop a pathways program that allows students to visualize the academic and non-academic path to various jobs.
WJON — Big changes are proposed at St. Cloud State University. As part of Governor Walz’s 2023 Infrastructure plan, SCSU is projected to receive $5.4 million for Phase 1 of the Education and Learning Design complex.
The multi-phase plan calls for the construction of a new building to house the over 1000 education majors, and the tear-down of the existing building, which will require some remodeling of other buildings to create space for some of the Health and Human Services classes and offices housed in the current Education building.
WJON — St. Cloud State has a group of students who will be participating in two different scientific eclipse ballooning studies in October of this year and April of 2024.
St. Cloud State University Assistant Professor of Meteorology and Scientific Education Dr. Rachel Humphrey and St. Cloud State University President Dr. Robbyn Wacker joined Jay Caldwell on WJON. Rachel is teaching at class this semester called “Introduction to Scientific Ballooning”. Students from different disciplines have the opportunity for field work (some for the first time) and do scientific education outreach around the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project.
KNSI — St. Cloud State University is worth $598.8 million to the local economy, accounting for 4,326 jobs.
The analysis considered the direct spending by SCSU on benefits, capital projects, operations, and pay as well as student spending and services that support SCSU. The study calculated tax revenues generated by the school at around $42.8 million. The study estimated that people who earn degrees from SCSU would help pay an additional $84.2 billion in taxes over their lifetime.
