Students considering their higher education options can apply for admission to St. Cloud State University without paying an undergraduate application fee for all of October as part of Minnesota State Month.
KSTP — He worked with Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. Ralph Heimdahl was born in Willmar in 1909 and attended St. Cloud State University when it was a teacher’s college.
“I think Ralph has sort of been forgotten a bit,” SCSU Archivist Tom Steman said.
After graduation, Heimdahl won a contest to work at Walt Disney Studios and taught at Disney’s animation school. He worked on classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo, and Fantasia. Heimdahl was offered the Bugs Bunny newspaper comic strip and he would draw Bugs for more than three decades.
ST. CLOUD LIVE — The Huskies have come so far that they’re ranked No. 7 nationally in the first American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll of the season. It’s St. Cloud State’s 16th consecutive week in the top 10 dating back to the 2021 season. That high of a ranking was unthinkable for the program in 2015.
The No. 7 ranking is the highest preseason ranking for the program since SCSU was ranked sixth in 1996.
KNSI — The co-founder and CEO of St. Cloud-based startup Impaks is getting national attention.
Clare Richards is being honored as one of the 2023 Junior Chamber International USA Ten Outstanding Young Americans. Impaks creates customized, pre-packaged school supply kits tailored to each school and grade, offering a one stop shop experience for parents and teachers, making sure kids have exactly what they need to start the year off right. Richards is a 2014 SCSU graduate.
WCCO — Those eager to cash in on a budding marijuana industry in Minnesota or cultivate plants of their own can turn to St. Cloud State University this fall to learn how.
The university is the first state school to offer such classes, which are part of a 24-week, non-credit certificate program. It’s a partnership with California-based cannabis training company, Green Flower, which will have industry experts as instructors.
KNSI — A St. Cloud State University graduate was the anthem singer at Saturday’s Vikings preseason game, and she brought the house down, both in person and online.
Paige Jaeger received a degree in 2020 and is now a technical director at U.S. Bank. The Vikings released a video on TikTok and Instagram showing Jaeger belting out the Star-Spangled Banner and then rushing back to the control room to help ensure a seamless gameday experience for those in attendance.
ST. CLOUD LIVE — Phillip Klaphake isn’t sure if anyone knows what he did on the football field in college. But he definitely remembers.
The Sauk Rapids activities director and head football coach was a semifinalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy during his junior year playing quarterback for St. Cloud State and was a finalist for it his senior year. The Harlon Hill Trophy is Division II’s version of the Heisman Trophy.
Dan Seeger has been named the Station Manager of KSVC at St. Cloud State University and began in his role on Aug. 16.
ST. CLOUD LIVE — When Kelsey Bean started selling candy and ice cream at The Chocolate Ox in downtown Nisswa as a high school sophomore, she had no idea that it would one day become her career. “This was technically my first job I ever had,” Bean said on a nice summer morning while sitting on the patio outside the popular store she now owns at age 35.
After graduating from Brainerd High School in 2006, Bean earned a teaching degree from St. Cloud State University four years later. She was an elementary school teacher for 15 years with the Sauk Rapids-Rice School District.
STAR TRIBUNE — That bright aura that emanated so strongly from McMullen-Boyer never dulled nor dimmed in her 30 years at the station, despite dealing with terminal cancer the past few years. She retired in April and died at her home July 12 at the age of 54.
McMullen-Boyer grew up in St. Cloud, where her father was a chemistry professor, and graduated from SCSU with a mass communications degree in 1991. She started working at KVSC as a student, writing copy and splicing reel-to-reel recordings for the news director.
