St. Cloud Times — The St. Cloud State University Planetarium has made its mark in outer space by naming an exoplanet in 16 characters or less.
The planetarium’s association with the International Astronomical Union allowed it to submit one proposal. Twenty stars (some of them with more than one planet) were to be named in an effort meant to stir interest in space.
The planet formerly known as Fomalhaut b will be renamed Dagon.
An exoplanet is one that lies outside our solar system. The first was discovered in 1992; about 2,000 other worlds have since been discovered and confirmed by two sources.
St. Cloud State opened the naming contest to the public.
