Exploration, Encounter and Exchange is the theme for more than 260 students from across Central Minnesota attending the 2016 Central Minnesota Regional History Day at St. Cloud State University to present their exhibits, websites, documentaries and performances 9 a.m.-2 p.m. March 19 in Atwood Memorial Center.
A statewide program sponsored locally by the Department of History at St. Cloud State, thousands of students throughout Minnesota are exploring topics of their choosing, relying on their own research and creativity to put a face on events of the past.
History Day requires students to go beyond the facts and dates to explore a historical topic analytically and in depth. In preparation for the event, students learn skills used by exhibit designers, filmmakers, historic interpreters and scholars.
“Students become more interested in history because they are not just covering something in their textbooks,” said Tim Hoogland, state coordinator. “Their research shows them that the key to history is discovering information about the past and how it still has meaning today.”
In 25 years, History Day has grown from 125 to more than 30,000 participants.
The Central Minnesota History Day event involves students grades 6-12 who attend public, private, charter and home schools in the region.
Winners at the regional events will advance to State History Day on May 1 at the University of Minnesota. State winners are eligible to go on to the National History Day competition in Washington D.C. in June.
