Duluth News Tribune — Andy Miller ’00 will tell you that he can spot an abandoned home or building from a mile away. No icicles hanging from the eaves, no mailbox, no lawn or snow maintenance. Oftentimes, there will be a sun-faded sign in the front window — which is what inspired the title of his long-running series “Sorry, We’re Closed.”
This is his forte. For the past few years, Miller has been seeking out the shuttered, decayed and forgotten places — and sometimes furniture — he sees during his regular travels. He has made hundreds of images of garages, old storefronts, crumbling churches, taken within a 250-mile radius of Duluth. So far, they’ve gone largely unseen. He simply posts them for a relatively modest Facebook and Instagram following.

The Duluth native was always into drawing and painting and, for a while, he studied art at St. Cloud State University. But the time commitment didn’t always balance with the level of enjoyment, Miller said.
