Alumna Taylor Schmit ’16 published an article as first author this June in “The Journal of Infectious Diseases” as a Ph.D. student at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.
Schmit is the co-first author on “Double-edged role of interlukin 17A in streptococcus pneumonia pathogenesis during influenza virus coinfection” published June 11 in “The Journal of Infectious Diseases”.
Schmit is in her second year of her doctoral studies the Khan Lab in biomedical sciences (immunology) at the University of North Dakota School Of Medicine.
In the first year of her program, Schmit earned a top presenter award from the American Association of Immunologists for an oral presentation at the Oral Immunology Conference and also placed first for presentations in the medical school while competing against fourth and fifth year Ph.D. students.
As an undergraduate researcher at St. Cloud State, Schmit worked with Professor Marina Cetkovic-Cvrlje, who mentored her in her research.
“You taught me how to present my research well and provided me with so many opportunities my last year as an undergraduate researcher to experience everything the research world has to offer — experiences not available to so many other undergraduate students,” Schmit said of working in Cetkovich-Cvrlje’s lab.
