Now head toward Lawrence Hall to view the 2006 “Infinite Voices” by Janet Lofquist on the lawn near the building’s west entrance.
“Infinite Voices” consists of a granite base on either side of the main sidewalk, each partially covered with a stainless steel panel bent like a loosely unfolded map. The surface of one is covered with the word “echoes” etched in 51 different languages, and the other with 51 translations of the word “reflections.”
Both words represent the materials and nature of the artwork, the idea of the intellectual and university endeavor, and acknowledge the constant and necessary dialogue between cultures and languages. The languages represent languages spoken on campus, while the words “echo” and “reflections” were chosen from a ballot sponsored in Lawrence Hall by the Center of International Studies, Department of Foreign Languages, and Lawrence Hall residents.
“Infinite Voices” was funded through the Minnesota Percent for Art program.
