Campus Incident Update from President Tomso

*This message was sent to faculty, staff and students on March 24, 2026.

Dear Fellow Huskies,

Recent news stories regarding the arrest of a student on campus yesterday have raised some questions that require answers.

Earlier today, the St. Cloud Police Department released information that the student is charged with having a gun in his possession. Some of the news headlines may have given the impression that the student was wielding the gun openly in front of other students, which is not the case. Had he been actively wielding a weapon, we would have issued a Star Alert to campus.

In addition, the SCPD statement indicates that multiple students were threatened. At the time our Public Safety team received the threat report, only one student had been threatened, though we have since learned that the accused student later referenced threatening a student organization. To the best of my knowledge at this time, no specific individuals were named in this comment. We are providing support to members of the organization.

When our Public Safety team and University staff learned of the initial threat to a student, they responded swiftly and professionally along with SCPD. The situation was immediately contained and the accused student arrested and trespassed from campus. I would like to thank our staff and the SCPD for their efforts. Our campus remains safe and secure due to their actions.

Federal privacy laws prohibit SCSU from sharing specific information about students. Please be aware, however, that the SCPD is still conducting their own investigation and may choose to share information of their own.

Students seeking support can call the St. Cloud State University Crisis line any time at 1-888-354-2887. During business hours, any students needing support can contact Counseling and Psychological Services at 320-308-3191 or the Dean of Students Office at 320-308-3111. Faculty and staff can contact the Employee Assistance Program at 1-800-657-3719.

Campus Public Safety can be reached at any time at 320-308-3333. If an immediate threat is observed, call 911.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gregory Tomso

President
