When the St. Cloud State University Department of Mathematics and Statistics debuted its latest event for high school students, the “St. Cloud State Calculus Showcase,” this summer, it was the team from Sauk-Rapids Rice High School, Alex Martins and Ryan Spies, who took home the first-place trophies – but there were strings attached.
College baseball: SCSU’s Jurgella hopes to get drafted
The awards continue to come in for St. Cloud State catcher Michael Jurgella. He is finding out about them as he tries to secure a spot at the next level of baseball.
He attended a tryout camp for the Minnesota Twins on Thursday at Target Field in Minneapolis. Earlier in the week, he took part in a tryout camp for the Milwaukee Brewers. He’s also taken part in a regional tryout camp for the Twins, San Diego Padres and Miami Marlins.

By September, the frayed-edged Crowne Plaza Hotel on St. Paul’s downtown Mississippi riverfront will reopen as the overhauled and gleaming InterContinental St. Paul-Riverfront, two years after the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe acquired it and the nearby DoubleTree by Hilton for about $35 million from an absentee owner.
Avon brothers still writing unlikely script
Both Dick Glatzmaier (SCSU Class of ’74) and Jim Glatzmaier (Class of ’75) went on to play baseball at St. Cloud State, where Jim also played football. They remain big Huskies baseball supporters, and established the Joe & Marie Glatzmaier Baseball Scholarship which is awarded annually at SCSU.
