Anne Mahlum, 34, founder of a string of five Washington-area fitness centers called Solidcore, knows her strengths and weaknesses. Her first taste of Washington came during her final year at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, when she interned on Capitol Hill for then-Sen. Kent Conrad.
