Houston News — Since 1982, hundreds of soccer players have walked through the halls of The Woodlands High School and onto the field.
Of course, before 1996, it was known as McCullough High School, and its longtime soccer coach, Gordon Schoeller ’72, has been there since the program’s inception.
Schoeller stepped down after the 2002 season, and was replaced by his protege, Hans Kleinschmidt. Schoeller remained a teacher at the school, however, and coached the Highlanders’ freshman team for another 12 years before finally turning the page on his career just a week or so ago.
…
As it happened, Schoeller would earn a gymnastics scholarship at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. While he yearned for a chance to compete in soccer, he had to settled for intramural competition.
Upon graduating from the school in 1970, he was offered a job at Hopkins High School as a teacher and coach, in boys and girls gymnastics, as well as an assistant soccer coach.
