Former captain of the Huskies swimming and diving team, Napoleon Howell ’14 is receiving a unique opportunity in professional finance given to only three or four college graduates every year.
As an assistant analyst for financial services firm Securian Financial Group in downtown St. Paul, Howell is in the first of three four-month rotations within different functional areas of the company. Upon completing the rotations, Howell can choose what area of the company he wants to stay in.
“I have had the opportunity thus far to really digest all that’s involved in an asset management firm and have learned a great deal,” Howell said.
Howell has been working on multiple projects involving mutual fund development, equity investing and the product development process.
Howell was born in Tampa, Fla., and grew up in the country of Trinidad and Tobago, graduating from high school in 2009. His talent for swimming brought him to Central Minnesota when he enrolled at St. Cloud State University.
His desire to work in the financial industry inspired him to pursue his degree in business management with a minor in finance. Howell graduated Magna Cum Laude in spring 2014 and already had an idea of where he wanted to work.
“The career fair was instrumental in me getting my job, given the fact that I had my first interview with Securian on campus,” Howell said.
In addition to setting multiple records for the men’s swimming and diving team, Howell was also the president of Beta Gamma Sigma and member of St. Cloud’s National Business Honors Society.
“Being on the swim team helped me develop emotional and cultural intelligence. It also helped me develop leadership skills,” Howell said. “My professors also helped me gain insight on the working world and helped me widen my cognitive scope.”
Howell spends a lot of his time volunteering and giving back to his community. He stays involved with organizations such as United Way, Bolder Options and Meals on Wheels.
