St. Cloud State Mass Communications students working for Husky Productions and UTVS earned multiple top honors from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association and the Society of Professional Journalists in April.
SCSU took home a total of 13 awards from the three organizations.
St. Cloud State University has once again been nationally recognized by the Broadcast Education Association for being one of the top broadcast schools in the country based on the creative achievements of students.
St. Cloud State University alumnus and adjunct professor Tim Johnson ’11 ’13 appeared on the popular game show “Wheel of Fortune” on Nov. 7, taking home nearly $40,000 in cash and prizes.
Johnson has taught in the Department of Mass Communications since 2014, and he also works as a Recruitment Marketing Specialist for CentraCare.
Hurricane Ian hit Florida toward the end of September, leaving destruction and tragedy in its wake. Hundreds of lives were lost between Cuba and the southeastern United States, and damages upward of $50 billion were sustained. Throughout it all, alumnus Gordon Severson ’10 was on the ground to bear witness.

St. Cloud State University alumnus Tony Abfalter has been in the southern-most point of the globe since February while handling most of the communications systems at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
Ben Pluimer ’04, Mass Communications graduate, was part of the creative team at Nickelodeon that won a 2021 Emmy for the Outstanding Playoff Coverage category for the network’s alternative coverage of the NFL Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints in January 2021.
Alumnus Sam Goetzinger, who graduated from St. Cloud State in 2022 with a Mass Communications degree with an emphasis in Creative Media Production, received 2022 Jim Nantz Award All-American Honorable Mention recognition by the STAA All-America Program in May.
